STOPMOTION

Best Clays:
Belgrave (only sold in Australia)
Van Atken (one of the most popular, and as upper says, one of the best)
Plasticine (not shiny, not really hard...I use this)
Sculpy III (dont know much, heard it was good)
Wax (only use this then you have mad modelling skills or want something like a puddle...)
Lego

Worst Clays:
Play Doh (soft, crumbly, JUST BAD)

STOPMOTION PROGRAMS
Monkeyjam
Helium Frog
iStopmotion(only for mac)
Stop motion Pro
Honestech Animation Studio

DO NOT USE MOVIE MAKER

FLASH, PIVOT PROGRAMS

Best Flash, Pivot Programs:
Pivot 3.0 (i don't like pivot but some people do...)
Macromedia Flash MX (My beginning version of flash)
Macromedia Flash 8 (Heard it was good...)
Adobe Flash CS2-CS4 (the best programs for this, you just have to know how to use it)

Worst Flash, Pivot Programs:
Paint and Windows Movie Maker (BIG NO NO)
Adobe Photoshop CS3 (using the animation toolbar) (NO!)

Please at least MENTION Van Aken as the best clays, as it is the most popular, and simply the best.

I use Van Aken clay, I think it is wonderful!
Monkey Jam is good, but if your just starting out I'd recommend Helium Frog.
That's if your looking for a free software.

I use Van Aken and I think it's great. I've been using the same blocks since last June and it is mostly still in good animating condition. Compared to the stuff where I live, there is no comparison. Well worth the cost to get it shipped I think. Not that I would have said no to something cheaper.

If you leave in America this is a good site to order Van Aken from.
They have all the colors, and it usually ships pretty fast.

nothing beats using softwares specifically designed for claymation /stop motion. but i have some friends who are beginners in the craft use the free and open-source Blender as a spring board to their stop motion training. so far, so good for them in the early going. as far as free softwares are concerned, others that pop in my head are MonkeyJam and FrameThief.

My clay is going to run out soon (or just reach the point where it becomes so dirty). Does anyone here use Newplast? I love Van Aken but it can be twice the price of Newplast to get shipped out here.
So any Newplast users think it's anygood?

NewPlast is a commendable alternative. You can get a 500g order for an estimated $3 dollars already. This is always my top choice as far as plasticine is concerned.

I've heard Newplast is also a really good clay.
I think it supposed to be about even with Van Aken.
